What is Food Poverty?
There is no widely accepted definition of ‘food poverty’ but in a nutshell those experiencing food poverty or insecurity is when individuals and families are unable to secure an adequate and nutritious diet in a socially acceptable way. Many who fall into food poverty are struggling because of low and unreliable income which makes it a challenge to cover rent, fuel and food costs, many individuals and families are forced to make a choice between heating and eating. According to the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) Households Below Average Income Survey:
“In 2022/2023, 7.2 million (11%) in the UK were in food insecure households, an increase of 2.5 million since 2021/2022. Among the 11.3 million in relative poverty before housing costs, 22% were in food insecure households, including 30% of children. People in relative poverty live in a household with income 60% less of the contemporary median income.”
